Scroll through social media and you'll quickly find someone claiming they're the secret to a healthier gut, a stronger immune system, or the perfect microbiome.

So, what's all the excitement about? Like many topics in digestive health, the answer isn't as simple as "good" or "bad."

Fermented foods have been part of traditional diets for thousands of years. Long before refrigeration, people fermented vegetables, dairy, grains, and beverages to preserve food and improve flavour. Today, scientists are learning that fermentation also changes the nutritional profile of food, producing compounds that may benefit health and, in some cases, introducing live microorganisms that interact with our digestive system.1

What Exactly Is Fermentation?

Fermentation is a natural process in which bacteria or yeast convert sugars into compounds such as lactic acid, acetic acid, or alcohol. This process preserves food, changes its flavour and texture, and can increase the availability of certain nutrients.1

Fermented Foods and Fibre Are Different

This is where many people become confused. Fermented foods and dietary fibre both support gut health, but they do so in different ways.

Fermented foods provide compounds that were created during fermentation. Some also contain live microorganisms. Fibre does something completely different. Fibre becomes food for the beneficial microbes already living in your colon.
