Instead, coffee stimulates what is known as the gastrocolic reflex. This is a completely normal physiological response where the colon increases its activity after eating or drinking. Coffee appears to amplify this reflex in some people, making a morning bowel movement more likely.2

Here is the important distinction. The gastrocolic reflex is not the same as a laxative effect or detoxification. Your colon is designed to move waste out regularly as part of a normal digestive rhythm. The gastrocolic reflex is not accelerating that process in a special way. Healthy digestion depends on several coordinated systems working together: normal stomach emptying, appropriate pressure within the stomach, and a lower esophageal sphincter that functions as it should. Stomach acid is not the enemy. It is supposed to be in the stomach. The problem begins when stomach contents escape into the esophagus.
